Background

Capitec, one of South Africa’s largest retail banks, aimed to modernise its data estate by moving away from an aging on-premise solution that was reaching its end-of-life. This system was running critical workloads daily, and as the volume and importance of data continued to grow, it became clear that a shift to a more scalable and resilient cloud-based infrastructure was necessary.​

Objectives

The primary goal was to migrate 15 years’ worth of business-critical data to AWS, and to increase the data’s proximity to the rest of Capitec’s compute workloads.​

Solution

Entelect was engaged to manage and execute the migration from an on-premise environment to AWS, implementing an enterprise data lake (EDL) as a centralised repository for storing structured and unstructured data at scale. ​

This solution allows data from disparate systems to be stored in its raw form, enabling a wide range of analytics and querying capabilities through AWS Athena and Amazon Redshift. ​

Outcomes

The project successfully migrated over 15,000 database objects without disrupting any of the bank’s critical operations. ​ The migration has resulted in mitigated risk by moving the data from a system that was nearing its end-of-life support to aa scalable, resilient solution. ​The new system also contributes to ongoing cost optimisation by providing reliable access to information across teams.​
