Background

Capitec, one of the largest retail banks in South Africa, set out to modernise their data estate and migrate from their on-prem solution to AWS. The primary goal of this project was to migrate 15 years worth of data, ensuring zero business impact across the bank’s critical functions.

Objectives

Entelect was tasked with helping migrate the data hosted on the on-prem solution to Azure Synapse expeditiously. This solution aimed to ensure a stable data estate, enabling teams to access data consistently, and accommodating for future scalability.

Implementation

The team faced the challenge of migrating data from a server while it ran crucial workloads on a daily basis. This required extensive collaboration, which resulted in consistent progress.

The project utilised Azure tools that provided data warehousing, system integration and orchestration of data pipelines, and analytics and query capabilities.

The migration process moved over 14 000 database objects, and involved rewriting code and optimising where possible, while replicating the existing orchestration.
